Suppose that you want to place a new word in your speaking and writing vocabulary. What sorts of things do you have to know about it before you claim that you know how to use it? Table 2 gives you a checklist of some basic requirements for your reference.

pronunciation Keep practising until you can pronounce it without thinking.
spelling Use the pronunciation to help you with spelling.
literary meaning For example, the word heart in "He has lately developed a heart problem."
figurative meaning For example, the word heart in "The heart of the problem is that he should not have behaved like that."
part of speech Is the word a noun or a verb or an adjective and so on?
collocation Find out the words that normally go together with the word you are learning. This is essential with phrasal verbs such as look at, look after, see to, take care of, and hundreds of others.
rhetorical features Is the word a formal word or a slang? Does it have a positive meaning or a negative one? Is it politically or culturally sensitive?
word formation Is the word actually derived from another word? Or is it a combination of two or more words?
