I feel really honored to have this opportunity to write something about Zhang, Dongyu here. First of all, I want to tell you how much I’ve been impressed by her persistence in pursuing self-development and self-enrichment even though she’s a fulltime mother now. She is an outspoken, inquisitive, intelligent and pleasant young lady. She speaks very good English and works hard. I did have a great time working with her in the past two semesters. And I’m sure she deserves to be honored as outstanding learner of 2005.

Actually there is nothing in particular worth mentioning with regard to how I had worked on my courses for the first year. In stead, some learners’ deeds strike me very much.
As a distance-language learner, the major concern is how to allocate my time. Lack of time is the biggest barrier for most learners to carry on their studies. I’m one among them. Bearing this in mind, at the very beginning I made a plan to cope with a great amount of workload. Under the guidance, I’ve been sticking to the following things: firstly, always set a goal in short term, which was based on an analysis of my current English level. Secondly, never leave both assignments and report progress to be done at the last minute. In terms of time management, flexibility should be made to deal with some contingencies. Thirdly, manage to present in tutorial. Tutorial is the only channel where I got the chance to communicate with the tutor and the other learners in English. At last, reading and listening to any material in English within my reach to develop my comprehensive skill.
To be honest, I didn’t work hard enough in my-first-year study for I didn’t follow strictly in the way the textbook designed and kept a very low involvement at online activities. However, I worked the other way around. I did some extra exercises beyond textbook while keeping a good track of what’s going on with all activities available online.
Being cultivated in an English-language environment for years helped me lay a sound base with my English, and the variety of learning resources provided by BWOL made my study in first year going rather smoothly.
