The lost of Garden of Eden
Spring had come once more to Lovers’ Lane—the beautiful capricious, reluctant Canadian spring, lingering through April and May in a succession of sweet, fresh, chilly days, with pink sunrises and miracles of resurrection and growth.
Blissful and sweet, the newly wed Philip and Lisa, were loitering along the Lovers’ Lane hand in hand, imbibing the fresh and crisp air of May, feeling the warm sunshine streaming on their shoulders, Lisa was humming tenderly,
“ Sunshine on my shoulders make me happy.
Sunshine in my eyes can make me cry.
Sunshine on the water looks so lovely.
Sunshine always makes me high.
If I had a day, that I could give you
I’d give you a day just like today.
If I had a song, that I could sing for you
I’d sing a song to make you feel this way.”
Philip put his arm around Lisa’s slim waist tightly, smiling at Lisa with that pair of clear blue eyes and said gently, “You know something, my little lovely? When I wandered along the street, the gentle breeze coming against my face, somehow, your adorable image was bursting upon the eye, and I murmured in my heart ‘Thanks God who has bestowed the most valuable gift, Lisa, to me’”.
“ How nice you are, my beloved. Likewise.” Lisa cast sheep’s eyes at Philip. “ Philip,” said Lisa in a silky voice, “ especially, I like strolling in the bright sunshine. When the might was sprinkling its sheen on my shoulders, my heart was melted with its warmth. It made a queer funny ache in the innermost and yet it was a pleasant ache. I felt an irresistible impulse to put my head on your strong shoulder, and smell the fragrance of sunshine with you, my sweetheart, like now.” And then, Lisa put her petite head with gold wavy hair glistening in the sunshine of May on Philip’s broad shoulder. Tears welled up her big goo-goo sky-blue eyes, streaming down along her cherry-like cheeks like limpid creeks.
Philip tasted crystal dews tenderly with his soft warm lips.
“ My big boy,” said Lisa, cheek scarlet and eyes glowing with shyness, “ once I dreamed about such place, where a great big woods with firs dancing, poplars erecting, birches rattling, and birds singing, squirrels dancing on the branches, and the white wild cherry trees were blooming and nodding, and the lilacs are in flower fling out whit of perfume, and a big bee tumbled out of a cup of lilac, and yellow dandelions were popping through the verdant meadow in bunches, and several hares were jumping up and down on there, and a brook laughing all the way across the meadow winded and disappeared in the thick woods.
Below the boughs, the air was full of a purple twilight and far ahead a glimpse of painted sunset sky shone like a great rose window at the end of an old country cottage.
Beyond it, lay the sea, shimmering and blue, and over it soared the seagulls, their pinions flashing silvery in the sunlight. We were dancing along the white sandy beach and splashing the water over each other like kids and jumping into the smooth surface of sea making turbulence as if two fish were playing in the silky sea.” Imagined Lisa, face alight and eyes glowing. “ And in the night we camped by the brook, appreciating the elegant crescent overhanging in the velvety night sky with Venus companying. Sitting in the moon boat, drinking in the sweet melodies, which produced by lovely crickets and frogs and soft wind on firs, we bottled the song of uniqueness of nature and our romance as well. No others bothered us, only you and me, like Adam and Eve.” Lisa signed happily.
“ What lovely moonshines!” teased Philip, clear blue eyes glistening with mischief.
“ Give me a break, you, naughty puppy. Looking forward to things is half the pleasure of them.” Lisa said, and pitched his cheek tenderly.
“ Ok, Ok, you are the winner,” giggled Philip, “ I have a fresh idea, kitten,” exclaimed Philip, eyes sparkling. “ One month ago, I watched an advertisement On TV. There is a hill near here named Garden of Eden the same as you dreamed of. Let’s go hiking and experience the simple life, ok? Neither car, nor mobile phones and nor others bother us, only you and me. I bet we’ll have an unusual weekend.” Philip’s face lifted rapturous.
That sensation of startling sweetness thrilled her, “ I can’t wait! Let’s start out at this very moment.” Lisa smiled at Philip, cheeks dimpled.
So, just a spur of moment, Philip and Lisa packed some food and clothes in their backpacks and took a tent with them. Without bringing mobile phones and driving a car, they set out rapidly on the afternoon of 2 May.
At the outset, they were in high spirit. The baby blue sky that looked as if there were no end to its blueness. Trough the lush, tremulous grasses splashed with shiny afternoon sunshine.
However, Lisa’s feet got a cluster of blisters at the mid of the trip. Therefore, Philip had to carried Lisa on his back for a while to release her. Abruptly, Philip was stumbled by a root of a tree and Lisa tumbled down the ground and her knee bleeding. Not only this, but Philip was suffering from a sprained ankle. Lisa made a great effort to help Philip limp along. Wrestling with the bitterness all the while, eventually, they arrived at their destination, the Garden of Eden in the evening.
Neither the crescent was overhanging, nor stars were twinkling in the evening sky. Only masses of dark ink clouds were shrouding the night sky.
Since it was dark at the point, they couldn’t see the cottage clearly. To their annoyance, the housekeeper was absent from work. Lisa tried to push the door. Surprisingly, the door was unlocked. The moment she opened the door, whit of stinks made her faint nearly. She caught her breath and turned on the light, instantly the room was dim with smallness, and 5 square meters approximately. There was a single bed standing against the wall. Beside it, a lower bedstand displayed which a vase with a bunch withered flowers were hanging their brown heads. Above it, a yellow picture with thick dust on it was dangling on the wall, where a spider was crawling along its net. Lisa knitted her brows and complained to Philip, “Some so and so is a lazy bone. So disgusting!”
After sitting on the damp bed, Philip squeezed a faint smile at her,“ Come on, little girl, let’s look at the bright side. At least, we have got a room with a good roof and a bed for us to rest. Cheer up! Tomorrow is another day.”
Exhausted and hungry, they huddled together in the small bed and got a sound sleep quickly. Yet their sweet dreams did not last long, for it began to rain.
A bolt of lightening flashed through the gloomy sky and ripped open its tidy dark cloak, disclosing the paleness, and a thunder rumbled above the cottage as if announcing its power.
The raindrops rushed out from the clouds, and unable to hold back straight down, in torrents, to the roof and the ground. Soon naughty raindrops were beating against the roof and quickly penetrating through tiny gashes trickling on their tired faces, the only damp quilt and their clothes as well.
“Philip, the roof is leaking. ” Lisa exclaimed. “ Phone the attendant quickly.
“ But we didn’t take mobile phones.” Philip roared. “ Lisa, help me set up the tent to shelter rain right now!”
Tremblingly Lisa slipped from the quilt, dragging the tent out. As soon as they built up it, they went to bed again and tucked the quilt under the shelter of the tent whereas raindrops were pouring along the tent into swelling puddles here and there on the ground of room. After a while, the room was so damp and chilly that Lisa could not stop sneezing and shivering leading up to the whole night.
At last, on dawn, the heavy rain ceased its function and yet Lisa suffered from a high fever. Subsequently, without any choice, miserable and scattered, Philip and Lisa ended their ‘romantic weekend’ in the Garden of Eden, what’s more, Lisa had to stay in bed at least for another week because she had suffered from a pneumonia.
For them, tomorrow wasn’t another day. As you knew, they had lost the Garden of Eden.
