Harry: I'm getting married.
Sally: You are?
Harry: Uh huh
1.
Sally: Who is she?
Harry: Helen Hillson. She's a lawyer. She's keeping her name
2.
Sally: (She bursts into a funny laugh) You're getting married?
Harry: Yeah. What's so funny about that?
Sally: It's just so optimistic
3 of you, Harry.
Harry: Well, you'd be amazed at what falling madly in love can do
4.
Sally: Well, it's wonderful. It's nice to see you embracing life in this manner
5.
Harry: Yeah, plus, you know, you just get to a certain point when you get tired of the whole thing.
Sally: What whole thing?
Harry: The whole life-of-a-single-guy thing
6. You meet someone, you have the safe lunch7; you decide you
like each other enough to move onto dinner
8; you go dancing9; you do the white-man's-overbite10; you
go back to her place; you have sex and the minute you finish, you know what goes through your
   mind
11? How long do I have to lie here and hold her before I can get up and go home? Is 30 seconds
   enough?
Sally: That's what you're thinking? Is that true?
Harry: Sure. All men think that. How long do you like to be held afterwards? All night, right? See that's the
   problem. Somewhere between
12 30 seconds and all night is your problem.
Sally: I don't have a problem.
Harry: Yeah, you do...(In the airport) Staying over?
Sally: Yes.
Harry: Would you like to have dinner? Just friends.
Sally: I thought you didn't believe men and women could be friends.
Harry: When did I say that?
Sally: On the ride to New York.
Harry: No, no, no. I never said this. Yes, that's right, they can't be friends, unless both of them are involved
with other people, then they can. This is an amendment to the earlier rule
13: if the two people are in
   relationships
14,the pressure of possible involvement is lifted15. That doesn't work either be cause
what happens then is the person you're involved with doesn't understand why you need to be friends
with the person you're just friends with, like it means something is missing from the relationship
16
and why do you have to go outside
17 to get it. Then when you say "No no no. It's no true. Nothing is
missing from the relationship." The person you're involved with then accuses you of being secretly
   attracted to
18 the person you're just friends with, which you probably are. I mean, c'mon, who the
   hell
19 are we kidding? Let's face it20, which bring us back to the earlier rule, before the amendment
which is men and women can't be friends. So where does that leave us
21?

1. Uh huh: You're right.

2. keeping her name: When a woman marries and does not change her last name to her husband's, she is "keeping her name."

3. optimistic: always believe things will turn out for the best and the future is very bright.

4. falling madly in love can do: being deeply in love can change you.

5. embracing life in this manner: expecting life and enjoying life this way.

6. whole life-of-a-single-guy thing: He is saying that the life of a single man is a routine.

7. the safe lunch: have lunch with a woman and if you are not interested in her,you can leave and say you have other things to do because it is in the middle of the day. If it is dinner, you do not have the same excuse.

8. move onto dinner: have a date to go to dinner with each other, only after you are still interested in her after the lunch.

9. go dancing: go to a club or disco. This is common on a date.

10. white-man's-overbite: This is a joke. He is saying white men bite their lower lip while dancing.

11. goes through your mind: what you are thinking; thinking something.

12. somewhere between: a place or time between...

13. amendment to the earlier rule: a correction to the rule from before.

14. in relationships: involved with someone; having an intimate relationship with someone.

15. The pressure of possible involvement is lifted: The idea or thought that they might become intimately involved with each other is taken away or does not exist anymore.

16. something is missing from the relationship: The relationship is not satisfying; something is lacking. Therefore, the other person needs a female/ male friend.

17. go outside: go outside of the relationship; find something somewhere else.

18. being secretly attracted to: is attracted to and likes the other person but will not tell anyone.

19. who the hell: This has the same meaning as "who" but "the hell" part shows that the speaker is emphasizing "who."

20. Let's face it: let us realize; let us deal with it; let us not lie to ourselves.

21. So where does that leave us?: Where does all of what I said bring us to? What is proven?
