爱尔兰是欧洲的音乐重地之一。继著名家庭组合The Corrs及男孩乐队 Boyzone之后，由Shane、 Mark、 Bryan、 Kian 和 Nicky 组成的Westlife在欧洲和亚洲崭露头角。

Westlife开始引人注目缘于1998年为Backstreet Boys 在都柏林的演唱会作开场表演。1999年4月，他们发行的第一首单曲“Swear It Again”, 在英国荣登排行榜榜首。之后，“If I Let You Go”、 “Flying Without Wings” 、 “Seasons in the Sun/I Have a Dream” 和 “Fool Again” 又成为英国的榜首金曲。

目前，Westlife由Boyzone的主唱Ronan Keating 和经理人Louis Walsh共同管理， 他们吸取了Boyzone未打开北美市场的教训 （Boyzone只有为电影 “Notting Hills”——《诺丁山》所作的插曲“No Matter What”曾风靡美国），开始为Westlife进军“大洋的另一边”寻找途径。2000年，Westlife 与Mariah Carey 成功地合作了单曲“Against All Odds”， 可惜并未在美国发行。不过，他们最近又在 The Top of the Pops Awards的典礼上共同演唱了“Never Too Far”。今年他们将有机会录制新的对唱作品。

旋律流畅优美、歌词真挚清新是爱尔兰音乐最突出的特点。Westlife 的歌曲多半承袭了这一抒情的优良传统。 “Flying Without Wings”作为他们的代表作之一，深情中不乏乐观的态度和对生活的思考。■
