Kate is an American history teacher engaged
to a Canadian doctor Charlie who loves traveling. But Kate is afraid
of traveling by air. One day Charlie tells her that he is going to attend
a medical conference in Paris and asks her to go with him. After some
hesitation, Kate goes to an air-travel simulation1
center to receive some training. Unfortunately, she is nearly frightened
to death on the very first simulation. Poor Kate has to give up the
idea of spending a week with Charlie in Paris though she desires to
see the Eifel Tower2
all the time. Besides, she has to stay in Canada for a certain period
of time before she can get the permanent residence visa.
After Charlie has left for Paris, Kate receives
several phone calls from him excitedly describing the beauty of the
city, which makes Kate feel a bit regretful. One evening, Charlie again
rings Kate. This time he is more excited, but what he tells Kate almost
drives her mad. In stammer,3
Charlie says that he has met a French girl named Juliette and has fallen
in love with her, which indicates that his relationship with Kate has
come to an end. Angry Kate decides to go to Paris immediately despite
her air-phobia.4
Boarding on the plane, Kate is very nervous.
She looks around and sees a savage-looking French man coming her way
and chooses to sit beside her. This makes her even more nervous. What
is worse, the man, whose name is Luc, tries to start a conversation
with her very rudely, which develops into a "war of words"
in which Luc mocks Kate as a woman fearing life and love while Kate
argues otherwise. Before Kate realizes it, the plane has taken off and
she finds it not so frightening in the air. Through the heated argument,
Kate learns that Luc is a French playboy enjoying life whenever he can
while Luc knows that Kate comes to Paris to get her fiance5
back. Just before the plane touches down6
in Paris, Luc goes to the rest room7
at the rear of the plane where he hides a beautiful necklace into a
vine.8 Then
he puts the vine into Kate's bag without being noticed.
Going through security check at the airport,
Luc offers to give her a ride to Hotel George V where Kate's fiance
stays. However, as soon as Luc gets out of the airport, he is stopped
by a police detective named Jean Paul who knows him too well to let
him go easily. Luc watches Kate leaving in a taxi, but he can do nothing
about it. Despite a careful search, the detective does not find anything
illegal in Luc's baggage. Once he is set free, Luc gets to Hotel George
V as soon as he can. As he is to enter the hotel, he happens to see
another thief Bob coming out. When Luc finds Kate in the lobby, she
has just fainted on the sofa after seeing Charlie and Juliette coming
down in the hotel's glass elevator. Luc wakes her up, but Kate cannot
find her bag, which obviously was stolen. Kate remembers that a handsome
French man tried to talk to her before she saw Charlie and blacked out.9
Realizing that the bag was taken away by
Bob, Luc immediately takes Kate, in a stolen brand new car, to Bob's
place where he gets his vine back while Kate only gets an empty bag.
It turns out that Bob sold her passport to someone else and gave her
clothes to a prostitute.10
While Luc leaves happily with his vine, Kate has no place to go since
it is dark by now. The next morning, she goes to the American Embassy
where her request for a new passport is rejected because of her application
to be a Canadian citizen. So she has to resort to the Canadian Embassy
where her application for a Canadian residence visa is also turned down
for her violation of Canada's immigration law.11
Desperate, Kate goes back to Hotel George V to seek help from Charlie,
only to be told that her fiance and his lover have just left for Cannes12
in southern France. Determined to get Charlie back, Kate goes to the
railway station to catch the train to Cannes where she again sees Luc.
It turns out that Luc found nothing inside his vine and went back to
Bob who told him that he knew nothing about the necklace which might
still be in Kate's bag. Thus Luc followed Kate all the way to the station
and wait for a chance to get his necklace back.
At the same time, the Detective arrested
Bob and got the information that Luc had smuggled13
an expensive necklace into France. When Luc was following Kate, he was
being watched and followed by the Detective. At the railway station,
Luc manages to get rid of the "tail" and gets onto the moving
train. Kate is surprised to see him again on the train. Luc tries every
way to search Kate's bag but in vain. Because no matter how hard he
tries, Kate always keeps the bag to herself. Even in sleep at night,
she puts it under her head as a pillow. When Luc wakes up again the
next morning, Kate is no longer in the car, which scares him to death.
After a quick search, Luc discovers Kate in the dining car enjoying
the delicious French cheese and beef while marveling at14
the beautiful scenery outside the train. Unfortunately, Kate soon suffers
from a stomachache, and Luc has to accompany her to get off the train
at a small station which happens to be Luc's hometown. It is a place
full of vineyards,15
and where they receive a warm welcome.
While Kate is enjoying the bump foods at
the dinner table, Luc finds an opportunity to search Kate's bag at last.
But, he cannot find the necklace no matter how hard he tries. Despite
the great disappointment, Luc begins to have a special attachment to
Kate. He invites her to taste a box of different bottled wines brewed16
by himself, saying that wines have diversified personalities just like
people brought up in different environments. He also talks about his
dream of buying a piece of land for a vineyard of his own. But this
will probably remain a dream forever because he has lost the expensive
necklace. Touched by Luc's romantic description, Kate also begins to
like him. Just before boarding on the train to continue her journey,
Kate reveals the very necklace on her neck and asks Luc to accompany
her. Luc is very happy and gives her a lot of valuable advice on how
to win Charlie back, the most important of which is treating him indifferently
and disturbing his happy relationship with his lover. Then, Kate should
invite Charlie to a dinner to discuss the detailed plan of breaking
up,17 which
will definitely cause him to regret.
Just as the plan begins to work, the detective
spots Kate and tells her the story about the stolen necklace which is
reckoned18
to be at least $100,000. He tells Kate that if the necklace is returned
to him the next day, Luc will not be sued. Kate agrees to help, but
she also asks the Detective a favor that all her savings wired19
from Canada should be exchanged into a check paid to her by Cartier,
a well-known jewelry store in Paris. At the dinner table, Charlie is
amazed by Kate's radiant beauty, especially with the necklace that Luc
insisted that she put on for the occasion. Charlie is also impressed
by Kate's resolution to break up with him without even a bit of sadness,
which adds to his regret. He cannot help asking her for a dance, and
the evening ends with the two going to bed together. But Kate is thingking
all the time about Luc. Meanwhile, Luc seduces20
Juliette to upset Charlie. Curiously, Luc's mind is full of Kate while
making love to Juliette.
The next day, Kate insists that she sell the necklace at Cartier for
Luc to purchase his dreamland in his hometown. When she comes back with
a check of $54,000, Luc is a bit unhappy for such a low price. But he
tells Kate that it is enough to realize his dream. The two say goodbye
to each other in a sentimental mood. Then Kate gets on the plane for
Canada. Waiting for the take-off on her seat, she hears a familiar voice.
It is Luc who has come to ask for her hand.21
The two go back to Luc's hometown, buy a vineyard, and live there happily
ever after.

Dialogue
Between Luc and Kate When the Plane Is to Take Off
Kate: Look, could you please stop looking at me?
Luc: It's incredible.
Kate: Wha-What?
Luc: Every muscle in your body is tense, even the lids of your eyes.1
Your nostrils2
are—are closing up. How do you do that? Me, I love to fly, especially
this moment—the plane getting ready to charge the runway, the engines
screaming, the pressure building, the force of it slams you back in
the seat, and then, whoosh—you are in the air. Everything else is behind
you. There's only one other place in life where I feel this kind of
exhilaration.3
Kate: Oh, yeah? Where's that? Oh, no, no, no. Don't tell me. Just let
me guess.
[Intercom: Flight attendants, prepare for takeoff.]
Kate: Oh, God. I don't think I can do this. [Gasping]
Luc: Did you ever think that maybe it is not the airplane?
Kate: What's not the airplane?
Luc: That maybe it is something else you are afraid of.
Kate: What are you talking about?
Luc: Do I have to say it?
Kate: But do I look that I can stop you?
Luc: It is obvious to me. It is not the plane that you are afraid of.
I know your type.
Kate: What type is that?
Luc: You're afraid to live, really live.
Kate: Oh, God.
Luc: You are afraid of life. You are afraid of love. You are afraid
of sex.
Kate: That is ridiculous.
Luc: I can tell from your face and how you dress with your little white
buttons all the way up to here. You are the kind of woman in bed, you
are waiting under the covers, the light is going off, and then, like
a rabbit...
Kate: What? What is the matter with you? You don't know me.
Luc: I know that you are afraid....
Kate: You don't know what I do, and Charlie never complained. Stop that.
There were a few months where I didn't feel like it. But that was a
long time ago, and I was in between teaching jobs. Yes. For you to sit
there with that smug4
expression and tell me that I have a problem with my life and my Charlie
is insane. [Engine roaring and the plane taking off]
Luc Advises Kate on How to Get Charlie Back
Luc: Lesson number one—before going into a war, you must choose carefully
the field of battle. Also never let Charlie see how much you desire
him. Never tell someone that you want him.
Kate: (Seeing a woman pouting5
at her lover) You see that?
Luc: What?
Kate: Look at that, that pout. Juliette did that. I remember that perfectly.
Luc: The pout is one of the French women's greatest weapons.
Kate: What's so great about that?
Luc: It's provocative.6
It puts the man in a constant state of excitement and anxiety. She can
say "yes" when she means "no", "no" when
she means "yes". Do you understand?
Kate: No.
Luc: You don't?
Kate: (Thinking for a while) Gotcha.7
Luc: Now, the most important thing. When Charlie sees you, he will be
expecting a big scene,8
a drama. You will not give him the satisfaction. This will make him
immediately intrigued.9
