周朴园 (点着一支吕宋烟，看见桌上的雨衣，向鲁妈） 这是太太找出来的雨衣么？
鲁侍萍（看着他）大概是的。
周朴园 不对，不对，这都是新的。我要我的旧雨衣，你回头跟太太说。
鲁侍萍 嗯。
周朴园 (看她不走）你不知道这间房子底下人不准随便进来么？
鲁侍萍 不知道，老爷。
周朴园 你是新来的下人？
鲁侍萍 不是的，我找我的女儿来的。
周朴园 你的女儿？
鲁侍萍 四凤是我的女儿。
周朴园 那你走错屋子了。
鲁侍萍 哦。——老爷没有事了？
周朴园 (指窗）窗户谁叫打开的？
鲁侍萍 哦。（很自然地走到窗前，关上窗户，慢慢地走向中门。）
周朴园 (看她关好窗门，忽然觉得她很奇怪）你站一站。
（鲁妈停。）
周朴园 你——你贵姓？
鲁侍萍 我姓鲁。
周朴园 姓鲁。你的口音不像北方人。
鲁侍萍 对了，我不是，我是江苏的。
周朴园 你好像有点无锡口音。
鲁侍萍 我自小就在无锡长大的。
周朴园 (沉思）无锡？嗯，无锡，（忽而）你在无锡是什么时候？
鲁侍萍 光绪二十年，离现在有三十多年了。
周朴园 哦，三十年前你在无锡？
鲁侍萍 是的，三十多年前呢，那时候我记得我们还没有用洋火呢。
周朴园 (沉思）三十多年前，是的，很远啦，我想想，我大概是二十多岁的时候。那时候我还在无锡呢。
鲁侍萍 老爷是那个地方的人？
周朴园 嗯，（沉吟）无锡是个好地方。
鲁侍萍 哦，好地方。
周朴园 你三十年前在无锡么？
鲁侍萍 是，老爷。
周朴园 三十年前，在无锡有一件很出名的事情——
鲁侍萍 哦。
周朴园 你知道么？
鲁侍萍 也许记得，不知道老爷说的是哪一件？
周朴园 哦，很远了，提起来大家都忘了。
鲁侍萍 说不定，也许记得的。

吕宋烟： 就是雪茄（cigar），因产地菲律宾吕宋岛而得名。

鲁妈：原名梅侍萍，是周公馆女仆梅妈的女儿，被周公馆的少爷周朴园始乱终弃，后嫁给鲁贵，人称“鲁妈”。称呼往往是语言中最难翻译的部分，因为不同语言的称呼系统有许多不对应的地方。“鲁妈”这个称呼就不好译，在中国，上了年纪的奶妈（wet nurse）、保姆（nanny）、女佣人（maid）都可以以“姓+妈”称呼，英文里尽管有Nanny+Surname的称呼，但是跟汉语的“姓+妈”并不完全对应，因此这里译成Nanny Lu并不十分恰当。像鲁妈这样的人，英语国家的人一般会称为Mrs Lu，但Mrs Lu‘鲁太太’跟“鲁妈”也不十分对应。这里“鲁妈”是剧台指示中的话，剧作者在剧台指示里可以直接用人物的名字指称剧中人，所以这里可以译成Lu Shiping。

太太：the Mistress‘女主人’，这个词是master‘主人、老爷’的阴性形式。

我要我的旧雨衣：意思是‘我要的是我那件旧雨衣’（It's my old one that I want）。

回头：意思通常是‘过一会儿’，这里可以不译。

嗯：这里这个语气词不能音译，而要按照仆人回应主人的吩咐时惯常采用的形式Yes sir。

看她不走：实际上是‘看到她没有照吩咐动身去做事’的意思，这里的“看”可以按‘注意到’(noticing that...)理解。英语的seeing that...是‘看出，明白’的意思，在这里不合适。

底下人：下人，仆人（servants）。

随便：意思是‘未经允许、召唤’，也就是说‘除非受到召唤’（unless they are sent for）。

不准……进来：英文说be allowed in即可，不必把“进来”译成enter或come in。

不知道：这里应采用过去时I didn't know that，意思是‘在你告诉我之前我不知道’。

老爷：英文对应词有两个：my lord和sir。my lord用于称呼上层贵族，有时与“大人”对应；sir既对应“老爷”又对应“先生”。周朴园不是贵族，因此这里应该用sir。

哦：英文用Oh，表示醒悟。

走错屋子：意思是‘进了错误的房间’（Then you've come into the wrong room.）。

老爷没有事了？：这里“老爷”不能作为句子的主语对待，因为这句话的意思是“没有事了，老爷？”。英语表达“没有事了？”通常说Is that all?，更委婉一点的说法是Will that be all？

窗户谁叫打开的？：这里可以译为Who opened that window?虽然“谁叫”的意思没有明确表达出来，但表达出来后，译文比较罗嗦，不是英美国家的人在这种情况下惯常的问法。

很自然地：此处的“自然地”不是naturally，而是casually‘无拘束、自如’。

她很奇怪：这里的意思不是‘她这个人奇怪’，因此不能译成she is very strange，而是‘她的举止有些奇怪’（there is something strange about her）。

站一站：即‘等一等’（Wait a minute.）。

你——你贵姓：直译是What...what is your surname？也可译成May...may I know your surname？

我姓鲁：Lu，英文不必把“我姓”译出来。

你的口音不像北方人：也就是‘你听起来不像个北方人’（You don't sound like a northerner）。为了说明是口音不像，后面可以补充一句 from your accent。

对了，我不是：That's right, I am not.或No, I am not.

有点无锡口音：You have a slight Wuxi accent.或Your accent sounds a bit like someone from Wuxi.

自小就在无锡长大：即‘我生在无锡，长在无锡’（I was born and raised in Wuxi.）

光绪二十年：The twentieth year of the reign of Guangxu，可以省去the reign of。

离现在有三十多年了：That would be over thirty years ago.注意：这里用的是will的过去时，表示不太有把握的推断。

还没有用洋火：这里不能用过去完成时，要用一般过去时we still didn't use matches。过去凡舶来品一般都冠以“洋”字，如“洋车”（rickshaw）、“洋油”(gasoline)、“洋灰”(cement)、“洋娃娃”(doll)。一般人以为火柴也是外国人发明的，所以称之为“洋火”，殊不知火柴其实是古代中国人自己发明的。

沉吟：这里可以理解为‘沉思’（thoughtfully）；“吟”表示出声，故也可以译为murmur。

有一件很出名的事情：也就是‘发生了一件很出名的事情’（a famous incident happened in Wuxi）

也许记得，不知道老爷说的是哪一件：这里最好理解为‘假如我知道您说的是哪件事情，我也许仍然记得，老爷’（I might still remember it if I knew which incident you mean, sir.）。
