My First Trip to Sweden
瑞典访问手记
本文作者跟随长春代表团访问了瑞典, 让我们和她一起去看看这个遥远而美丽的北欧国度吧。
I
never dreamed that I would set foot on Sweden, a distant and small country
of the Scandinavia until one day I had a chance to visit our project
partners there. And, the trip which has left me with memories of a beautiful
land and friendly people often comes back to me so vividly and clearly
as if it were only yesterday.
The Arrival
The flight with Air China was very pleasant
as the plane was roomy with the first rate service. It took almost ten
hours to fly from Beijing to Stockholm with a short stop-over at the
airport of Copenhagen. After landing, we were met by Mr. Rading, one
of our hosts, who had just arrived from USA. He hired a car at the airport.
While driving through Stockholm, we were impressed by the city. It looks
grand, clean and elegant, which is very much like the nation itself.
The old part of the city coexists harmoniously with the new one. Without
the introduction of the host, we would hardly have recognized the differences
between them. Stockholm is located on a large number of lakes and it
faces the Baltic Sea. The beauty is really breath-breaking.
"Turn on TV and see what's on it.?Our host
had made reservations for us in a local hotel. Shown into my room, I
saw the simple and neat furniture and the beautiful paintings on the
wall. I was told to turn on TV and see what was on it. To my surprise,
there was "Welcome to this hotel, Madam Chen from China. Wish you
a happy stay here.?on the screen. I can never forget the sudden surge
of warmth in my heart.
"We care for our environment.?Going through
cities and villages, I was attracted by Swedish national flags flying
over houses and buildings which were ordinary family houses and offices.
I noticed that on the road, all the cars?headlights were turned on even
under the sun of June. Mr. Rading explained that according to the new
traffic regulations, drivers were required to keep the lights on day
and night, which helped decrease the traffic accidents. Along both sides
of the roads, there were high fences used to keep the animals living
in the forests from rushing onto the road. I could see little bare land
in the country. In fact, fifty-four percent of the land is covered by
forests which are hundreds of years old and another ten percent by lakes
and rivers. I was told that in Sweden nobody has the right to lay the
land bare-whoever cuts the trees or spoil the grass must restore it
right away. The level of private ownership of wood is high. Whenever
trees are cut, they are replaced by young trees at once.
Around Sweden, there is a notice in the bathroom
of every hotel, which reads "We care for our environment. We don't
want to pollute the water with harmful substance of the detergent. Put
the towels on the rack if they are still clean enough to use.?In Sweden,
you cannot see rubbish in streets, public gardens, rivers or lakes.
The country is so clean that you can sit anywhere you like without dirtying
the clothes. The bottles are made of glass and the packages are made
of paper or other natural materials which can be recycled. To make best
use of their resources, Swedes never turn on the heating too high or
the air-condition too low. The indoor temperature is always kept around
twenty-five degrees centigrade, no matter at home or in large hotels.(Story
