Passage One

Scientists in the United States are trying to develop a tree that will be ideal for city life. They say that in many cities the air is so filled with poisons that the plain, old-fashioned tree will certainly disappear.

The ideal city tree must have shallow roots. Roots that go down too far get in the way of underground pipes and damage the pipes. On the other hand, the ideal city tree must have fairly short branches. Branches that reach too high affect the overhead lines. The tree must not drop fruit on people’s heads, either.

But most important, the ideal tree for the city must be strong. It must resist diseases. And it must be able to stand the effects of the pollution in the air. The trees can prevent the strong winter wind from coming to the cities. They can also resist the dust in the air and make the air clean and clear. People of the country are looking forward to seeing this kind of tree turn up in the near future. The trees will become the green guards of the country and bring a lot of benefits to the country’s environment and people’s life.

Passage Two

In 1933 an unknown American called Clarence Nash went to see the film-maker Walt Disney. He had an unusual voice and wanted to work in Disney’s cartoon films for children. When Walt Disney heard Nash’s voice, he yelled “StopThat’s our Duck!”

The Duck was the now-famous Donald Duck, who first appeared in 1934 in the film as a wise little hen. Donald lived in old houseboat and wore his sailor jacket and hat. Later that year he became a star after an eight minute Mickey Mouse film. The cinema audiences liked him because he was lazy and greedy, and because he lost his temper very quickly. And they loved his voice, when he became angry with Mickey’s eight nephews. Soon Donald was more popular than Mickey Mouse himself, probably because he wasn’t a goody-goody(伪君子)like Mickey.

In the 1930s, ’40s and ’50s Donald and his friends Mickey, Goofy and Pluto made hundreds of Disney cartoons. He also made educational films about the place of the USA in the world, and safety in the home. Then in 1966 Donald Duck and his voice disappeared—there were no more new cartoons.

Clarence Nash died in February, 1985. But today’s children can still see the old cartoons on television and hear that famous voice.

Passage Three

You will be aware that it is not only the building that matters but also the area it is in, or rather how easy it is to get out of that area, especially when you are going to work in the morning. So if you’ve got a certain place in mind, find out which buses and trains go to the various parts of the district and how often they are. It is sometimes more difficult and inconvenient to travel a few miles when you have to change buses twice.

The difference in fares could be reflected in the fact that a house outside a city area was cheaper. If you know your exact needs it may be worth putting in an advertisement yourself.

Your personal needs and circumstances will be very important but also consider your family: how far from the center will heavy shopping bags have to be carried; and how long will it take the children to travel to and from school; will elderly relations living with you find the nearest bus-stop too far to stop? You will also want to check that there are no plans for future developments, such as a motorway past your front door or complete redevelopment on a surrounding space. Your local authority planning officer can advise you on these matters.

Passage Four

America is growing older. Fifty years ago, only 4 out of every 100 people in the United States were 65 or older. Today, 10 out of every 100 Americans are over 65. The aging of the population will affect American society in many ways ¾ education, medicine, and business. Quietly, the graying of America has made us a very different society ¾ one in which people have a quite different idea of what kind of behavior(行为) is suitable(合适) at various ages.

A person’s age no longer tells you anything about his/her social position, marriage or health. There’s no longer a particular year in which one goes to school or goes to work or gets married or starts a family. The social clock that kept us on time and told us when to go to school, get a job, or stop working isn’t as strong as it used to be. It doesn’t surprise us to hear of a 29-year-old university president or a 35-year-old grandmother, or a 70-year-old man who has become a father for the first time. Public ideas are changing.

Many people say, ‘I am much younger than my mother ¾ or my father’. No one says ‘Act your age’ anymore. We’ve stopped looking with surprise at older people who act in youthful ways.

48. “Act your age” means that people should ______________________.

A. be active when they are old

B. do the right thing at the right age

C. show respect for their parents young or old

D. take more physical exercise suitable to their age

49. If a 25-year-old man becomes general manager of a big firm, the writer of the text would most probably consider it ________.

A. normal      B. wonderful    C. unbelievable     D. unreasonable
