1985年获英国兰开斯特大学(Lancaster University)现代英语与语言学系理论语言学优等硕士学位；

　　1987年获该系修辞学与语用学博士学位，师从英国学院院士利奇(Leech)教授。

　　1988至1990年从事博士后研究，师从许国璋教授。

　　1990年至今在北京外国语大学任教。现为英国学术院K.C.Wong Fellow;《当代语言学》杂志主编之一、国际《语用学》杂志咨询编审。

　　1988-1998年十年间，在国际杂志上共发表论文12篇，并主编2期专刊。在国内杂志上发表论文8篇，并主编1期专刊。共编写英语及语言学教材14部，中译英修辞学史专著1部。

　　国际会议特邀主讲人4次。前后应邀讲学及作专题报告的国外大学计13所。
