International Food and Agriculture Organization With Zero Hunger Goal

On the first day after arriving in Rome, all the students were divided into four groups, to visit the FAO and the cultural heritage on different itineraries in Roman. Our students from the BFSU took a short break in the morning and drove to the International Headquarters of FAO for a visit in the afternoon.

The International Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is the first permanent specialized agency within the UN system and also an international organization that discusses food and agriculture issues among member states. Its purpose is to improve the people’s nutritional level and living standards, the production and distribution of agricultural products, the economic situation of the rural and peasants, and the development of the world economy and to ensure that human beings are free from hunger. After a strict security inspection procedure, everyone guided by the staff to visit the office area, conference hall and other furnishings.

Through the introduction of the staff, we learned that the core of FAO’s work is to achieve the Zero Hunger goal of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. And this will still be an extremely difficult task. While we enjoy a rich material life, more than 800 million people around the world have difficulty of accessing to food every year and even face the danger of starvation. In order to achieve the goal of Zero Hunger, efforts need to be made in the following four aspects: 1. Ensuring food security 2. Providing adequate nutrition 3. Sustainable agriculture 4. Eliminating poverty. In response, the International Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has designed a set of forward-looking programs to address specific requirements for governments, small-scale family farmers, the private sector, and ordinary people. It is expected that the “Zero Hunger” initiative will be implemented.

  • ●Governments and political leaders: Effectively monitor the market; ensure that large companies respect and protect the rights of local people when buying or renting large amounts of land; advocate healthy eating; increase investment in research; and focus on the development of agricultural areas.
  • ●Small-scale family farmers: set up cooperatives, unite and strengthen their own strength, better access resources, adapt to climate change; develop common strategies for sustainable farming; protect natural resources; improve harvesting, grain storage, and packaging technology to reduce food loss.
  • ●Private sector: Financial companies provide funding for poorer agricultural households; supermarkets can join the “food saving” initiative to reduce food losses and waste; multinational companies use large areas of land in a responsible way; telecommunications companies develop new mobile phones Application, providing farmers with access to information; the media should advocate more food-related issues such as hunger and nutrition.
  • ●Ordinary people: avoid food waste; improve eating habits; protect water resources; protect fish; keep soil and water clean; local procurement; recycle resources;

It can be seen that achieving the sustainable development goals can be achieved not only by the efforts of international organizations or national governments. Each of us is the promoter of the goal. Only by implementing the actual actions, Zero Hunger will not be just a sentence or a slogan. The realization of this goal cannot be separated from the joint efforts of all mankind.

During the visit, we also came to the top of the FAO building. From the heights, we looked at the urban scenery of Rome and the magnificent architectural complex. As soon as we walked out of the city, we heard that everyone could not help but utter a wave of exclamation, the civilization of the millennium. The ancient monuments are in front of our eyes. The majestic prosperity of ancient Rome is amazing. Everyone is full of imagination and expectation for tomorrow's cultural tour!

Finally, we took a group photo at the FAO Hall. It is hoped that the goal of Zero Hunger, driven by the International Food and Agriculture Organization, will be achieved on schedule. Let us work together to move towards the goal of eradicating hunger!
