雪天又感冒,击败你的真的是寒冷吗?

以前你听长辈们唠叨过无数次,多穿点儿别感冒了!随着年龄逐渐增长,30岁的你可能不像20岁那样一条秋裤抗过冬,对下雪天的兴奋劲儿也只够用来刷个朋友圈,而卧室里的温暖被窝早已被你当成了抵挡严寒预防感冒的神器~

But can the cold actually make you sick?

但感冒真的是寒冷天气干的吗?一个很萌的外国砖家表示你们都图洋图森破!

Just a quick note: we’re talking about colds, flus, and viruses here, not hypothermia — a cold-related illness where prolonged exposure to the cold causes the body temperature to get dangerously low.

小提示:这里说的是感冒、流感、病毒性感冒,不是身体长期处于寒冷环境下造成的“体温低”的毛病。

Dr. Margarita Rohr, internist at NYU Langone Medical Center.

这个很萌的专家叫 Margarita Rohr,来自纽约大学医学中心。

Viruses and germs get you sick, but not the cold weather.

真相是,病毒和细菌让人得病,外面的冷空气只是躺枪好吗?!

“In order to get sick, you need to be exposed to the virus which causes the common cold or flu — which comes from another person,” says Rohr. You can get sick from direct contact with an infected person, or indirect contact with them (like inhaling germs in the air or touching infected surfaces then your mouth or eyes).

想要生病,你得让自己暴露在有能力导致感冒的病毒环境中,而这种病毒其实是被另一个蓝星人带来哒!所以你的感冒完全有可能是因为直接或间接接触另一只小伙伴而得上哒。

So you’re more likely to get a cold from sipping someone’s drink than you are going out to the bar without your winter jacket.

所以,单薄的外套和酒吧别人喝过的杯子,哪个是你得感冒的最大嫌疑者?

But it totally seems believable because fall and winter are also flu season.

但因为秋冬确实是感冒多发季节,所以“低温引起患病”的嫌疑人罪名实在需要好好澄清一下。

The reason why the myth prevails, according to Rohr, is because you’re most likely to contract the common cold (rhinovirus), the flu, and other bugs in the fall and winter when cooler temperatures make it easier for viruses to survive and spread. But they still need to be transmitted between two people.

那为什么这个说法如此流行呢?据说是因为在温度较低的天气里,病菌们比较容易存活且非常乐于繁殖。但它们需要搭上某个蓝星人的顺风车才能快乐地找到下一个温暖的新家,这时候如果你免疫力有不是辣么顽强,就很容易沦陷啦。

“I think the myth really comes from earlier generations who had a fear of catching polio, which could come from contaminated water outside,” says Rohr. That’s probably why grandma always nags you to wear fifty scarves.

低温导致流感的说法可能来自人类早期的先辈们对患上脊髓炎的心理阴影,而那是随着户外的脏水传播的。所以你现在明白为什么奶奶爷爷辈的老人总念叨多穿衣服了吧。

“If you’re an asthmatic or smoker and you have lung issues, exposure to cold air can cause constriction of airways and make symptoms worse,” says Rohr. Similarly, if you have a cold and experience a lot of chest congestion from mucus, constricted airways will make it more difficult to breath deeply and worsen your coughing temporarily. But low temperatures won’t actually cause a cough or congestion itself, Rohr says.

如果你有哮喘或者是个老烟枪,那么接触冷空气会让你肺部不适甚至有发病的可能,而如果你本身得了感冒,一下子吸进太多冷空气会让你肺部剧烈收缩导致咳嗽加重,但低温本身是不会让一个健康的人咳嗽哒。

The truth is, you’re more likely to get sick if you are cooped up inside around a bunch of other people.

事实是,你跟一帮子人挤在一个小屋子里会让你得感冒的几率大大增加。

“When it’s cold, it means you spend much more time indoors in enclosed spaces with people who could be sick and contagious,” says Rohr. The lack of circulation inside makes it easier for a virus to transmit through the air. It also means a whole lot of contaminated surfaces like door knobs, sinks, keyboards, etc. — so it’s easy to get a virus from any family members, roommates, and coworkers you share a space with.

当寒冬来袭,我们都变成行动迟缓、喜欢扎堆的四脚动物,而室内不流通的温暖空气正好是感冒病菌求之不得的大农场。那些你不经意碰到的公用物品,门把手啦、洗手池啦都会变成高危传染源。所以你其实更容易从家人、室友、同事等呆在一个空间里的蓝星小伙伴那儿接收大批移民病菌。

And the fresh cold air — in moderation — is pretty good for you.

而此时,窗外看起来恶意森森的冷空气其实对你来说是充满友爱的哦。

Being cooped up all winter isn’t great for your immune system. It’s actually much better for you to go outside and do some light activity in the fresh air. “If you’re too sick to go outside, I suggest you open windows so you can ventilate the indoors and get rid of some of the germs and viruses in the air,” says Rohr.

总是窝在温暖的室内对你的免疫系统也会造成破坏。走出去,拥抱新鲜空气,做点适度的运动,你会发现寒冷并没那么咄咄逼人。当然,如果你已经病到完全爬不出门就算了,不过至少开窗通通风吧。

This still doesn’t mean you shouldn’t dress properly when it’s freezing outside.

当然这么说不代表你可以任性耍单儿哦。

Just because the cold doesn’t make you sick, you should still dress appropriately for the weather to avoid hypothermia and making any cold symptoms worse, especially if your body is working to get over a virus or flu.

If really you don’t want to catch a cold, your best bet is to practice proper hygiene and stay away from sick people.

当然,不是说寒冷不会把你冻感冒你就有美丽冻人的权利。如果想要感冒远离你,可以选择在清冷的室外做运动,并远离感冒患者。

Rohr suggests that you wash your hands often (especially before eating), avoid touching your face, sanitize doorknobs and light switches if you don’t live alone, and give your sick friends support and love from afar.

另外,大家最好勤洗手,避免用手碰到脸的部位,如果你的室友得了感冒,要把你们公用的东西消毒擦干净,并远程表达你对他的支持和爱。
