Abstract: The World Wide Web is claimed to have added new dimensions to
language learning and teaching. The most noticeable feature of the Web is its
similarity, even identity to real life. On it language learners can read Web
versions of daily newspapers and same-day news reports from sources such as
Reuters, BBC, etc. or sign in chatrooms to meet and
talk to native speakers across the globe. As the authenticity of the materials
is believed to more likely lead to success in LL, students are often simply
asked to visit the Web pages in the target language (which is English in this
paper) for language learning, without any specific guidance. Therefore, English
input increases. But does the Web exhibit the features of a naturalistic
environment that offers more opportunities for language learners? And is
unintentional learning as effective as expected? This paper considers how
highly the Web is valued in LL and LT since it emerged and works out four
different methods of integrating the Web in the language classroom.
